- Depending on registration, it is possible to have several Pee Wee teams.
- (It is possible the league will combine this division into one this year with players ages 5-7. Check back for updated information)
Rookies (Player Ages: 8&9), Juniors (Player Ages: 10&11)
- The Rookie and Junior Flag Divisions will play in the T&C league.
- Teams in these divisions will play a 5-man game on teams made up of between 6 and 9 players. (Team size will depend on final registration numbers.)
- All games will be at T&C. (It is possible this may changethis year as we have been talking to Round Rock youth football about having more interleague games. However, the majority of the games will still be at T&C)
- Depending on the number of teams, most games will be played on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. It is possible that some games may take place on Thursdays or other week nights.
Practice
- The scheduled practice times for flag teams are Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:00 until 8:00
- Practice days, times and durations will depend a great deal on the coach.
- It is possible that some teams will need to practice on a Tuesday or Thursday.
- Most teams will only practice for an hour or an hour and a half (again, depending on the coach and age of the kids),
- Some teams will only practice once a week.
- Some may practice on Saturdays before the season begins.
- All practices will take place at the T&C complex unless a coach receives approval for the team and the board to practice off the property.
How teams are selected.
- All flag players will workout together for the first few practices (usually grouped by age). During these practices they will go through football drills and evaluation drills.
- On draft day the coaches will draft the teams. If a player has not attended enough practices to be evaluated, they will be placed on a team as drawn from a hat by the league coordinator. (All players registered by the cut-off date will be assigned to a team.
- The draft system is used to create teams as competively equal as possible. Because of this we cannot honor requests to play with a friend. With teams comprised of as few as 6 or 7 players it can’t be accomplished. Please feel free to request a friend in the comments section of your registration as coaches often pick players that want to be together but please understand that it may not be accomplished. Usually this is not a problem as most of the teams practice at T&C on the same day and time so carpool issues have not been a problem.
Coaching
- Because the flag teams are small, we are always looking for coaches.
- Head coaches will be selected from the pool of applicants by the coach selection committee before the draft.
- Coaches will be required to go through the coach certification training (usually an evening class) and submit a background check. (For more info on coaching contact a flag league coordinator.)
- Benefits to coaching flag football at T&C:
· This is a great way to enjoy the game and have fun with your kids.
· This is also a great way to insure that your child can play with his friend as each chosen head coach is allowed to protect his child and his assistant’s child from the draft. Both player will be placed on his or her team and not be eligible to be drafted by another team.
Flag Football Frequently Asked Questions
Can girls play flag football at T&C? Yes, flag football is co-ed and open to both boys and girls. Although, there haven’t been many girls in the past, we encourage both boys and girls to participate and hope to have more in the future. Due to the number of players and teams there are no all-girl or all-boy teams. All player will be in the same draft pool.
What equipment do I need? The league provides the game jersey, flags, and footballs. Your child will need cleats, pants and mouth guard. Each team will determine the pants, socks, etc that will make up the team uniform so don’t purchase these before you have a meeting with your team or consulting with the coach. For practice before teams have been selected players should wear a comfortable, cool t-shirt and either shorts, baseball pants, or football pants. (Baseball or football pants are often the best choice as they protect the legs and knees.)
When does practice begin? Practice for the Fall 2008 flag teams is set to begin around August 11th for the Pee Wee Division and arond August 13th for theRookie & Jr. FlagDivisions. However, these are not final yet and subject to change so check the wesite calendar around the end of July.
When does the season end? All flag games should be completed by November 11th. At present the expected last day for games will be November 10th. However the number of teams and weather conditions over the fall may cause that to change.
What paperwork do I need? All players will need a copy of their birth certificate, a physical signed and filled in by a doctor, and signed spectator behavior form. The later two forms are available on our website on the documants page.
What if I am not sure if my child wants to play Flag or Tackle? If you are uncertain but think your child might want to play tackle, it is likely best to sign up for tackle and start with the tackle players on August 1st. This way he or she will have a week or so to see if tackle is for them or not before flag practice starts. As long as you notify the registrar that you would like to switch before the Flag draft takes place it is usually possible to switch. (They may have to be assigned to a team by the coordinator as they aren’t eligible for the draft but it is possible) It is much harder to go from Flag to Tackle as they will have missed a lot of practice time and may be too late for the tackle draft.
